Harefield Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Slough on Sat 08 May 2010 at 11.30am
Harefield Cricket Club Won By 9 Runs

Match report Harefields long awaited appearance in all day Premier League Cricket was played out in grey, damp and freezing conditions at Woods Cricket ground on Saturday.
A gusting northerly wind brought conditions more akin to January as HCC were inserted on a tricky early season surface.
After the early loss of the Bulawayo Mid West Rhinos opening bat, teenagers James Hammerton and Jack Shiel set about building our innings against an accurate Slough attack. Runs were hard to come by and survival proved difficult.
Shiel perished to a leading edge, Pete Lynch came and went and Hammerton succomed to a dopey run out. Skipper Akshay batting at five led the counter attack ably supported by Olly Richards and Luc Baldwin.
The Hares appeared set to post a challenging total when Akkers ran past an off break to be comfortably stumped. A late order collapse saw us subside to a disappointing and seemingly below par 143 off only 38 overs.
Early inroads to the strong Slough batting order were needed if our Premier League debut was not to end in ignominious defeat. Gloom descended as our visitors made a positive start assisted by a strangely profligate spell from our Mid West Rhino.
Doug King was keeping Harefield in the contest operating with pace and hostility from the Pavillion End.
Kings aggression and full length proved too much for Slough as their top order were blown away by the Thames Valley Leagues leading bowler of 2009. The key wicket was that of the experienced minor county cricketer Bobby Sher. Sher Sloughs captain extravagently shouldered arms only to watch in horror as his off bail was trimmed by a venomous swinging off cutter.
Our Doug was well supported by twenty one year old Dale Morris making his League debut for Harefield. Dale wrested control from our visitors with a miserly ten over spell of well flighted, accurate off spin conceeding only 20 runs. The new boys stranglehold on the Slough batsmen allowed King to wreak his havoc and take 6-29 from the opposite end.

With Slough reeling at 71-7 HCC seemed to have victory in the bag but we were now reminded just how testing Premier League cricket will be as an eighth wicket partnership inched Slough to within ten runs of victory. By now Olly Richards had replaced the tiring King after a thirteen over spell. Ollys fifth over finally swung the match decisively in our favour as the stumps were twice rattled by full pitched swinging deliveries.
Zimbabwes finest duly wrapped up proceedings by removing the number 11s off pole, sparking wild celebrations from the players and a large red wine fueled crowd which had gathered during the afternoon beneath the conker trees.

A great start for the Club in the highest standard of cricket that we have ever played in. Our players will have learnt much from our opening HCPL encounter, not least that we have nothing to fear and that we can compete at this new higher level. Also that 60 overs is a long time to bat and a greater appliaction and patience will be required during the long season ahead.

The day was a great success off the field as well, with all running smoothly behind the scenes. Special thanks should go to Tracy who has been fretting all winter about providing lunches for our HCPL matches. We had assured her that all would be well as League rules state that lunch will be taken at 1.30pm. Cue wild panic!! from the kitchen as the umpires called for an early lunch at 12.30 as rain swept across the field.

Finally HCPL Officials at the match were hugely impressed by Harefield Cricket Club, our facilities, our catering, our team, and the spirit in which the match was played. Their parting comments were that Harefield will be a great asset to the Premier League. Indeed a day for us all to be proud!!!
