Newbury 2XI v Harefield Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1.30pm
Harefield Cricket Club Won 3 Wickets

Match report Armed with several experienced heads, the 3s went about maintaining their winning streak (1 from 1) in the blazing sunshine at Newbury. A lost toss meant that the skipper was sent to Coventry, we had to field first in the soaring heat and for the 3rd week running would need to chase down a score to secure the points.

Petters had been picked as a specialist batsman and so with Quinny returning from Uni duty and Tucker fresh from 20-pints and an encounter with Winchester's finest, we opened up with some raw pace. Having lost Scotty to a romantic weekend with the lady, the Skip donned the gloves. Quinny fired in his first delivery...not only was it straight and fast but it swung wildly and hit the gloves...only to then fall out again. It was going to be a long day in the field.

Fortunately this performance improved, only one catch going down behind the sticks off the taller of the opening pair and one at second slip off Quinny who toiled away all afternoon. Martyn Rimmer and Craig Duncan bowled well and with control, Cristals offered up some offies and Deep decided he wouldn't find out whether the pitch was turning or not and proceeded to dismiss the best batsman with a(nother) full-bunger. The pick of the bowlers were Quinny and Tucker though; between them they picked up only 2 wickets but conceeded only 80 runs in their combined 30 overs in the scorching heat. Top effort that.

We took wickets regularly, but dropped catches again played a part and in the end, Heath Messer (75*) guided his side to 193-6; a fair score on a lush outfield...tea was taken and we resumed our quest for 20 more points.

PD is settling into his opening role with aplomb. Smoking 10 from the first over he had us up with the run rate from then on. Caza provided support, but departed in the teens, Tucker was adjudged for not many, the Skip was bowled around his legs and Craig Duncan nervily lobbed his second delivery to mid-on. Yep...60-0 had become 60-5. Again.

And so it took the aggressive Petley (dropped first ball) and the experienced 'Big' Zeb to steady the ship. 60-5 became 100-5, 100-5 became 120-5 before Cristals joined Petters who had made his way to 50 very briskly. Cristals needed a runner (and an ECG) soon after so the spritely youths sent Big Zeb back in to contribute 54 years to the now combined age of 153 at the crease for HCC.

And that was almost it, Cristals caressing, Petters plonking...and yet there was time for one more twist in the tail. A Petters 'schwing and a misch' brought new boy Deep to the crease with the boys 7-down and requiring 10 for victory albeit with plenty of time (as always).

A two from Deep, a single from Deep, a two from Cristals. 5 required...but the new man was facing the wiley old medium pacer who had so far made light work of the middle could watch! They should've been...

To say Deep smashed the next ball would be an respect, one bounce four. One required. But what was this...? Deep lined up for another biggun and miscued to square leg...surely they'd take a single and win the game...? SURELY...?! No. They stood their ground. Maybe he would try to find the gap this ti...maybe not. The ball hit the clubhouse on the full. 6 runs. A win by 3 wickets with 3.3 overs to spare. NICE.

Well done to all, thanks for filling in when needed. The Skip will be absent this week (resting after a long knock?), but would like to be kept informed of developments at Chesham. Please.
