Chalfont St Peter 2XI v Harefield Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 12.30pm
Harefield Cricket Club Lost 3 Wickets

Match report With England kicking off at 19:30, the skippers arranged an early start for the top of the table clash between our 3s and Chalfont 2s; Chalfont top of the table by 1 point at the start of the day. We’d strung a few results together and having scored plenty of runs in the previous weeks, the skipper decided on batting once he called correctly (yep - heads again!) - posting 200 would get the maximum points and with Nicky Patel, Labels and Goose among the starting XI, defending that would certainly be possible.

Well, things didn’t go our way and Scotty was dismissed in the second over on what turned out to be a fairly sticky-wicket. Harshan, PD and Cristals all got starts and were either undone my the mysterious pitch or even more mysterious shots. Joe O’Hara, promoted to 6 after the fall of two early wickets, was the only batsman to post a decent score, finishing six short of a half century.

We carried on accumulating down to Goose at 11, a reflection of the strength of the tail, and finished on 170 a/o off 45 overs…tea was taken (top effort from CSPCC in almost matching Tracy’s finest) and we resumed with the old ball soon after.

VC Mike Christelow had spent the tea break examining the wicket and consulting his copy of ‘The Art of Captaincy’ by Mike Brearley and subsequently suggested we employ two short cover fielders. As has happened in previous instances when the “Twins” have had some inspiration, the move paid immediate dividends, CSP 2s opening batsman lofting his second ball to the skip at short cover. Hoorah. Unfortunately, 0-1 didn’t become 0-2 despite a convincing appeal for a catch at first slip a few balls later. Never mind…Instead, we restricted Chalfont well and took wickets at fairly regular intervals. Nicky Patel taking two of the seven wickets we eventually held onto.

We had however allowed the remaining opener to score 70-odd and his departure with 15 required was a shade too late…Chalfont, guided by their vocal number 6 who took a, errrr, shine to Scotty, won by 3 wickets with a few overs remaining.

Next week we play Stoke Green at home, as of this evening, we have a super-strength bowling line-up and we’re looking forward to getting back to winning ways, we want some momentum when we take on the ringers that Hayes seem to be fielding these days (Little-legs, should you by some miracle be reading this, you’re a first-teamer…!).
