Winchmore Hill v Harefield Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 08 Aug 2010 at 1.00
Harefield Cricket Club Won by 40 Runs

Match report The Past it, the Present and the Future

The future of Harefield cricket club converged on Sunday to extinguish the recent popular belief, that it is in fact a cricket club with a drinking problem rather than a drinking club with a cricket problem. With debutant Ryan Finch being called in due to a failed fitness test of Martyn Rimmer the team set off under the skipper’s keen sense of direction and even keener eye of opportunity and talent.
After a delayed start due to a malfunctioning Tom Tom, the academies were inserted. Out strode the partnership of ‘Cut and Paul’ which through a variety of cuts, flicks and some very well placed drives steered us to 50-0 off just nine over’s. The showmanship of the opening pair was brought to a end with a diving catch from a miraculous caught and bowled from a young Sobers. Sobers then took his second wicket as young Lench was still struggling to acclimatise after his recent efforts to get West Drayton personality of the year. In strode the captain, his job to rebuild the innings and stable the ship, while this may have been the plan his early attempts looked more like he was willing to go down with it.
The skip struggled on with the help of Lappers who by this stage had got himself to a solid 40 (which he increased to 63). The partnership was broken and King departed on 40 by a diving catch at midwicket. Richards brought a cameo of flicks to leg and got a solid 25 as he and Lappers departed the destructive middle order of Evans and D. Morris, took time out from their afternoon bird watching (according to Dale a Red headed Kite, a black bird and a collection of tits, chickadees were on show) came to the crease and blasted the bowling out of the water.
After a brief innings from S.Morris, Day, Duncan and Finch the Academy left the field to what turned out to be a disappointing tea by Tracey standards on 252.
The opening bowling partnership that had toiled two years ago in Rome bounded in and bowled a terrifying spell of pace and bounce going at just 2.72 after their combined 11 over’s. See that terrifying pace worked the skip turned to it again as he called upon the debutant. “Finchyyy” stepped up to the mark with a variation of slower balls and flighted off breaks to dismantle the top order including the first team batsman. A spin master class then began with Finchyyy (3-37), S. Morris (1-61), D. Morris (1-34) and finally Petley (2-5 could have been 3-1 if a certain Past it player could catch) accompanied by Duncan (1-38).
So the Academy prevailed souls intact which could not be said for the number 9 for the oppo to a convincing win of 40 runs. The team of youth (+1) learned a lot on their travels (a) it’s a team game and when all the team contribute the team wins. (b) Sometimes its better that Skip doesn’t win the toss. (c) That Red Kites, tits and chickadees can be found inside the M25!
