Kew 3XI v Harefield Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 28 May 2011 at 1pm
Harefield Cricket Club Won By 60 runs

Match report This week's lesson in Cricket 101...? Having 11 batsmen helps when a team is 108-8, especially when the combined experience of numbers 9, 10 and 11 outweighs that of numbers 1-8. That experience combined with some powerful hitting dug us out of the hole which the top order, inserted on a sticky dog, had created.

The only prior resistance had come from David Cokeley, retained in the opening berth, who scored 66 and at one stage had scored 50 of the teams 65 runs; Evans, Petley, Ogden and Morris all caught in front of the bat to leave the team short of any bonus points. A period of introspection to come for those who are yet to reach 100 runs for the season surely follows.

108-8 however was transformed by Labels, Cristals and Petters who combined to hit bad, and good, balls to the fence with such aplomb that a declaration was briefly considered after 51 overs with 215 on the board. Instead we used all 52 overs in posting 225-9.

Harry and Petters were entrusted with the new ball and post an early wicket were immediately carved open by the free-scoring Kew wicket-keeper who has been in the runs every week this year. His 50 came very quickly and if it hadn't been for Howard's safe hands at long-on, the game may well have been over a lot sooner.

Wickets continued to fall (Hiren, Harry and Labels doing the damage) but it was only once Kew's skipper fell to a knee high catch by Cokers at square leg that we had visions of 25 massive points. The introduction of Matt Ogden's slow left arm then produced a further breakthrough and with two veterans under the lid around the bat, the pressure told and Labels held onto the 10th wicket at cover.

We jump to second in a closely-fought league behind (but within striking distance of) Datchet, having played both teams closest to us. Petters will be in charge next week as we face Fleet at home and with some of the uni boys re-emerging from the post-exam, booze-fueled sabaticals, we should only get stronger as a club week by week.

Here's hoping...keep me informed of developments all day please.
