Bagshot 2nd XI v Harefield Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report A blend of youth and experience took to the field at Bagshot for the 3rd team’s long awaited season opener. The skipper lost the toss and Bagshot opted to bat first.

Jordan McCleod opened the bowling from the away swing end and debutant Hannes Verwey used the slope from the other end to assist his in-duckers. We were soon left rueing the lack of an adequate warm up as the first 3 chances were dropped as well as a missed opportunity of a run out. Next week will see a far more dynamic preparation that will hopefully change the swing of favour in our direction when the chances come.

Mark Petley was introduced to the attack and soon accounted for their skipper and opener with a caught and bowled off a leading edge. Bagshot were still only 1 down at drinks and a change in personnel saw Mike Christelow take over the wicket keeping duties from the incumbent skipper after fears his legs wouldn’t hold out for batting. The change reaped immediate rewards as Cobus Jordaan (2-fer) drew the other opener into nibbling at an away swinger which was snaffled at first slip. Hannes came back and bowled another good spell taking 3-fer but all in all we bowled too many bad balls and Bagshot dispatched them with consummate ease leaving us a chase of 244 to win.

The batting platform was set perfectly by openers Ryan Collett (70) and Dan Ogden (42) who took us past drinks and left us with wickets in hand to complete the run chase. Cobus Jordaan and the skipper set about the task by pressurising the Bagshot bowlers and scoring at a rate of 10 an over to get us within 60 runs of victory. Bagshot brought back the opening bowlers and stemmed the flow of runs for a couple of overs which unfortunately led skipper David Cokeley (29) to try and manufacture runs by trying to reverse sweep a straight one. Poor shot selection with 2 settled batsmen in and closing in on victory proved ultimately fateful as Jordaan (37) holed out soon after and there was not enough time for any of the middle to lower order to get themselves in and steer us home.

The 8 points gained from this games could quite easily been 20 with some improvements to the fielding and shot selection from the skipper. We welcome Sonning to the Dairy ground this Saturday and the 3’s will be looking to post their first win of the season.
